Are You R ? by Abraham Cloud
A Poet of Brutality Remember that guy in High School who got away with everything, screwed everyone, stole things, drove too fast , played in a rock band and got whatever he wanted. Well that’s R in this sonic examination of behavior modeling. Even though R has “raped his sister” and “spoiled his Dog” the narrator still idolizes him. It really says a lot about the human condition when we idolize the strong aggressor until he turns his aggression on us. It’s like John Lennon said before starting his amazing, “War is Over ” campaign , “How can you expect peace out of a society that spends 3-6 hours a day watching people shoot guns on TV. ” Lennon saw violence glorified and advertized everywhere when he decided that someone must start advertizing Peace. I think everyone can relate to the hero worship that’s portrayed in “Are You R” Every hormone driven adolescent boy and most Americans, seems to latch on to the idealized version of their superhero self. In this case it’s R. The crazy self-destructive rock and roll god who will terrorize anyone with a slower car. “I felt so strong, there by your side,” sings the narrator. “I can see my destiny in your eyes. ” “Are You R” appears on the “Another Successful Breakfast” CD. Anytime (you walk into the room) – Abraham Cloud
Check out this rare version of the classic, “Anytime You Walk Into The Room.” This version features Rory Anton , Fren Askin and Lesa MacEwan (who some have called Abraham’s daughter because of her odd magical vocal blend with the writer.). Both Rory and Lesa played with Abraham in The Children of the Milkman band. Lesa hits new heights of ancient delights in her vocal solo , where she relaxes and lets her Irish Wings go sailing. in the essense of vocal beauty. The angst , the longing , the unrequited love is a constant theme in Abraham Cloud music , but it’s never quite as beautiful as here. “You smile away my problems, you laugh away my cash anytime you walk into the room.” Those who witnessed this particular version of the band live have likened it to Arcade Fire in the religious or transcendent feeling it aroused. “One fantasy alone, don’t mean much it’s like an antidote to doing anything embarrassing, anytime you walk into the room. ” You could easily imagine this song behind Katniss Everdeen, in one of the more passionate scenes from the Hunger Games. The odd haunting instrument heard is the 10string Chapman Stick played by Fren. Abraham Cloud sums it all up in the line, “If I could only speak, you’d turn me down and I could get away quick, at least we’d have a secret to keep. “
